Renew Dronelicense

Why do I need to renew my EU drone certificate?

Renew Dronelicense

The EU drone certificate is valid for five years. Three months before your certificate expires, you can take a refresher exam again. This ensures you continue to meet European regulations required to keep flying. By renewing on time, you avoid fines, flying without insurance, and ensure that you do not have to interrupt your operations.

You can renew your drone certificate starting from three months before the expiration date. Note: once the certificate has expired, it can no longer be renewed. In that case, you must retake the exam for all categories in which you wish to continue flying.

Important: the renewed (refreshed) drone certificate is only available for download via the RDW once the old drone certificate has actually expiredUntil that moment, only the current, still valid drone certificate is available.

How do I renew my drone certificate?

Renewing your EU drone certificate can currently be done in two ways:

  • By taking a refresher exam; this can be done through a refresh package.

  • By obtaining a flight certificate in a higher category, which will automatically renew your previously obtained drone certificates

Is your EU drone certificate about to expire? Then this is the perfect moment to consider whether a higher level better suits your flight activities. By choosing an exam in a higher category, you not only renew your current drone certificate but also immediately expand your privileges as a drone pilot.

What do the refresh packages look like?

Refresher courses

Refresher candidates must always renew the highest drone certificate they have obtained. Therefore, we offer a refresher package for all drone certificates. The content of the learning package remains the same, but you choose which parts you want to review. It is also possible to take the refresher exam directly.

If you choose the A1/A3 refresher packageyou will complete one refresher exam:

  • A1/A3 refresher (20 questions)

If you choose the All-in refresher package, then you will take two refresher exams:

  • the A1/A3 refresher (20 questions)

  • the A2 refresher (15 questions)

Note: With the All-in refresher package, you will receive your new drone certificate only after passing both refresher exams.

We know our trainees very well. With our 10 years of experience, the lesson plan completely optimised so that the trainee is around level as soon as possible. We always ask for feedback and incorporate it immediately if necessary.

OmniDrones can also print your flight certificate on a sustainable card in credit-card format. Easy to carry and you’ll always have the correct documents with you! This card can be ordered separately.

The certificate issued by the RDW is provided in Dutch and English by default. If you order a card, we can adjust the certificate on the card to any language you prefer. Please specify the desired language in the comments field when placing your order.

Frequently asked questions

General

The drone licence is valid for 5 years, after which you have to take another exam.

In the Netherlands, the A1/A3 and A2 drone pilot licences require a minimum age of 16.

If you are under 16 years old, you can also get the A1/A3 and A2 drone flying licence, however, you will only be allowed to fly under the supervision of someone who is 16 or older and has their A1/A3 and A2 drone flying licence.

Other age limits may apply in other countries.

You need an operator number if you own 1 or more drones with a camera or weighing 250 grams or more. By applying for an operator number, you are registered as the owner (operator). You only need 1 operator number even if you have several drones.

You apply for an operator number in the first country where you will fly in Europe.

If that is the Netherlands, you can apply to the RDW for an operator number. Click here for more information.

The application in Belgium is through the FPS Mobility and Transport click here for more information.

In Germany, this goes through the LBA, click here to start registration.

To apply for a Remote ID, you first need an operator number.

Drones labelled C1, C2 or C3 new to the market from 1 January 2024 will have Remote ID.

Also, many existing drones already have Remote ID built in. Note that this feature is not always activated. Check the supplier or manufacturer's website to see if your drone has Remote ID.

If your current drone does not have a Remote ID and it is required, there are 2 options:

  1. From the manufacturer of your drone, you will receive a message with a software update that activates the Remote ID function on your drone.
  2. You can use a special module (add-on) buy. That is a Remote ID transmitter that you can attach to your drone.
